Arrangement of Dancers

1st quarter 21st centuryEncre and acrylicH x L : 200 x 300 cm

The work entitled Arrangement of Dancers impresses at first sight by the monumentality of its composition, but especially by its unusual technique (painting on Plexiglas), invented by contemporary painter H. Craig Hanna. It could be called an aquarelle on a human scale, because the paint is indeed water-based!

The apex of this imposing triangular composition is formed by the standing man wearing green trousers. The two sides are the piece of fabric on the left and the arm held by a young naked woman on the right, while the base is suggested by the naked man lying on the ground. All the faces are directed towards the central character except for the young woman at the left of the painting, who is staring directly at the viewer. The pictorial quality of the different materials (fabrics, bodies, etc.) should be noted. The work is drawn with incredible skill. Together, the drawing and the choice of colours form a balanced whole, giving an impression of sublimation.

Of American origin but living in both London and Paris, Hanna revisits the history of European painting with the eye of a master draughtsman and the singularity of an artist of his time.

His avant-garde technique of superimposing paint on both acrylic glass and the wooden panel creates striking effects of colour and composition, offering a new facet of contemporary figurative painting.
