The Portrait Society | Théobald Chartran
Théobald Chatran was a French history and portrait painter. He was a student of Alexandre Cabanel at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. From 1872, he exhibited regularly at the Salon in Paris. Chatran lived for some time in Rome, London and New York, where – like his contemporaries John Singer Sargent and James McNeill Whistler – he produced numerous portraits for high society families. Among others, he portrayed the family of President Theodore Roosevelt. In 1877, he was awarded the Prix de Rome.
